Life of a diabetic is a difficult one. Not able to consume sweets to one side, their life goes through a major overhaul with several dietary changes and constant management of blood sugar and blood pressure levels to ward off any complications.

However, for closely monitoring these parameters, once cannot be expected to go visit the doctor every week, despite the fact that it is extremely imperative to do so. This is similar with other kinds of chronic illnesses too, like cancer, issues with blood pressure etc.

However, Zyla tries to bridge this gap, by offering an in-depth approach that not only helps with the diagnosis of even the simplest of problems but also offers ways to alter lifestyles and lead a better life.

We got to interact with Khushboo Aggarwal, Founder, Zyla Health where she revealed what made her start this endeavour.

How did the idea of Zyla emerge?

Khushboo Aggarwal, a pharmacist-MBA by profession with over a decade of experience in the field has previously served as a healthcare consultant with conglomerates like Deloitte and Monitor Group. She shared with us what made her start Zyla.

“I have worked on projects in the developed markets where I helped big pharma launch billion-dollar products and worked with large insurance companies in the patient engagement space. I understood the concept of “value-based care” against volume-based care, which is practically absent in India. While the US market is driven by health insurance that ensures outcomes, in India there is no one entity taking “accountability” of patient outcomes,” said Khushboo.

Speaking about healthcare in India, she revealed how it is prominently a self-pay model that was ‘patient driven’ and how it was a major problem for people wanting to receive better healthcare, “My belief that I should solve this problem was strengthened when I was on a consulting project in California and my father had a heart-related event brought on by diabetes. Through the next 6 months of hospital to-and-fro, I realized that a chronic patient in India and their caregivers (families) are very helpless.”

She added, “Even though a diabetes patient in India spends anywhere between Rs. 15,000-50,000 per year on their health, they end up with an untimely complication and hospitalization more often than not. 80 percent of such chronic patients eventually end up with a heart attack, kidney failure or similar complication. I started Zyla in Jan’17 to solve this problem, with a vision to help chronic patients manage their disease better and avoid these complications.”

Need for personalised monitoring

Khushboo revealed the issue that’s faced while seeking constant monitoring from clinics or hospitals, “Conventional brick and mortar hospitals/clinics are set up for acute care and not rightly equipped to handle chronic diseases, which adversely impacts the treatment outcomes. Chronic care requires continuous and personalized monitoring, the absence of which leads to severe complications/ mortality. A case in point is that 80 percent of diabetes patients when not monitored well, die of an untimely heart attack and there is a 4x increase in treatment cost for diabetic with complications. A chronic patient in India spends Rs. 15,000 – Rs. 50,000 per year out-of-pocket on health management and still ends up with an untimely complication.”

She added, “At Zyla, we have built a digital chronic care management platform with end-to-end solutions for real-time medical/ lifestyle care. We work closely with 1200+ leading doctors across India to offer continuous, real-time, personalized care to patients suffering from chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.”

Maintaining constant contact with the patient

Horoscop scorpion acvaria. Zyla’s stands out of the crowd by offering a unique clinical approach with personalised real-time patient care, where a patient can always chat or communicate if they experience any issue.

Kushboo explained, “We capture meta-data of every patient across 300+ parameters - historical and real-time patient data across Diseases, Diagnostics, Drugs, Symptoms, and Lifestyle - and deliver the next best recommendation to the patient. The recommendation engine is built over 50,000+ medical protocols with the help of leading doctors across India. The Zyla chatbot delivers this care 24x7 to the patients and escalates critical medical queries to an in-house medical team for the highest quality care.”

Keeping confidential data secure

When dealing with a patient’s medical history, privacy and confidentiality of the data is of utmost importance. “ We take utmost care to ensure the highest level of privacy and data security. All data is hosted on secure cloud servers and can be accessed only by authorized medical professionals. All data in transit is encrypted using the latest technologies and our systems are audited by third-party for vulnerability testing,” said Khushboo.

Communicating with an advanced AI chatbot

Zyla applies the magic of AI and ML in the form of a really advanced chatbot that communicates organically, just like a human. However, apart from this, they’re also harnessing advanced workflow engines and deep learning algorithms to take real-time action and prevent health complications.

However she mentioned that most of the credit to their AI/ML prowess goes to Google, “We have greatly benefited from the mentoring we have received from Google AI/ ML leaders as part of Google Launchpad in 2019, especially around building scalable solutions at optimal cost. The mentoring we received as part of Google for Startups helped us push the boundaries of our tech evolution.”

Making people feel better is her strongest motivation

Khushboo revealed how her biggest motivator is the impact Zyla is able to create in the lives of the people, “We have already served over a lakh diabetes patients in India, who have improved their sugar levels by more than 16 percent and improved cholesterol levels significantly. We are one of the most loved Medical apps on the google play store (Play store rating is 4.7). We have an NPS of +70, unheard of in healthcare.”

She added, “We have built Zyla around the core values of empathy and trust - for the patient and for the team alike. We are most proud of this culture, as it’s rightly said culture is the operating system for any startup.”
